There Is A Laser Surgery That Can Permanently Change Eye Color

No, it’s not a side-effect of LASIK or something, there is actually a variety of laser surgery specifically intended to change your eye color. Permanently. A doctor in Laguna Beach, California has developed a technique that allows him to use lasers to change brown eyes into blue eyes by destroying brown pigment in the iris. The procedure is quick and painless, taking only about a minute to pull off.

After the treatment, the color change takes place over the course of about 2-3 weeks as the eye slowly gets rid of the melanin that had been hiding the blue base. Basically, your eye spends a few weeks crying out its color, until you’re left with baby blues. There’s no explicit mention anywhere, but it seems that this surgery, as it stands now, can only convert brown eyes to blue. It might be able to turn green eyes blue as well, but considering it seems to focus on getting rid of overlaying colors by stripping down to the base, us blue eye’d folks will have to stick to colored contacts.

This procedure isn’t quite ready for prime time yet. Gregg Homer, who filed a patent on the process back in 2001, expects it to become widely available in the United States in the next few years. Widely available, and also pretty expensive. Around $5,000. As someone with blue eyes, I believe I can say this with some authority: Blue eyes ain’t worth five grand.

The patent, while hard to read and ridiculously broad (as patents tend to be) does make mention of “hue[s] that [do] not naturally occur in a human iris,” so it’s possible Homer has something up his sleeve where he might be able to dye eyes permanently purple or yellow, but that’s a whole other can of worms I think better left unopened. I, for one, prefer to keep lasers out of my eyes whenever possible.

I’m getting a distinct Sneetch vibe from this.

  • Donutz87

I got black eyes and have always wanted lighter eyes, green eyes would be awesome, do they do that?

  • Elizabeth Gagne

    do they have spice-saturated hues??

  • Wavesong

To go from light eyes to brown, you could always give Latisse a try. Darkening of the iris is a rare side effect of this lash-lengthening drug.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=563223409 Vic Horsham

Not as far as I know, but you can now tattoo the whites of your eyes blue.  Combined with this you’ll have spice eyes in no time!

I’d wait a few years to see what kind of horrible problems this will cause.

  • Paul Shepherd

Latisse was only a side effect of Lumigan, the glaucoma drug. Then they discovered they could market it for alot of money.

You don’t know anything about the human eye, right? It is totally obvious, as I can tell by your ignorant comment. You should look up and learn about the human eye and after you do your research you will understand that it is not possible to go blind with this “method.”

  • Iknowyou

    Then please do explain.

  • Kmazarie

Ahh, I can’t wait until this comes to the U.S. I’ve been wanting to change my brown eyes to green or blue for years now.

  • Mycockis9inches

In order to go blind you need the laser to focus on your optic nerve. Thats where all the information the cells in the eyes relay to which then go on to the brain. This procedure focuses on the iris, and the wavelength used is specific for this brown pigment. Since the procedure doesn’t focus on anything else, you wont go blind as a result of the procedure… Unless death is after you then you got a role in final destination or something along those lines

I had Lasik surgery about 15 years ago & I have excellent vision now and have never suffered any side effects.  I absolutely love not having to wear glasses (unless they “cute” for fashion) anymore.  I’d love to turn mt brown eyes blue.

  • Rockabella6585

honestly, i’ve always wanted green or hazel eyes, never blue, but, somehow, between my brown eyes and my daughter’s “sperm donor”‘s green eyes, she got blue eyes, so, that’s the only time i’ve been tempted to change mine to blue, because my husband’s eyes are hazel/brown, so my daughter has completely different coloring from either of us.  she has my ex’s red hair too, so, since mine is brown and my hubby’s is REALLY dark brown, people are constantly asking me where she got her red hair and blue eyes. :P  really annoying.  i already dyed my hair red to match hers, but i change my hair so often due to boredom (i’ve pretty much had every color imaginable), it didn’t last that long.   i think i’d still prefer to have green eyes in stead, but, $5,000 is too much for this no matter what color they could make my eyes. :P

  • Babiluv888

this is soo cool, that is the doctors name, i wanna look him up

  • Naila Momin

i have black eyes and i wanted lighter eyes so will it be possible

  • Nail Momin_11

will there will be any side effect on our vision

i have brown and would really love ² have greengray Mix or blue ,
i really hope this thing is really safe!
if it really was then many Famous people would have done it and still no one did ,
so how can we know its really safe ?
i don’t think anyone would love to spend their life blind seeing no light no color anything :S

  • Shirleycoachman

there is no such thing as black eyes on a human being, but i dont think that they can change them to green yet.

  • Wilder

My husband, an eye surgeon in NYC, recommends patients learn to live with their eye color, and vision when possible. Reason: you only have one pair of eyes. Eye health is critical to the aging process. Fact: you need every cell in and around the eye area for your “eye age” to be normal. Fact: eyesight begins to decline around 40. More serious eye changes begin around 50. Critical health matters appear for more then 50% of all patients by 60. Most are treatable. Fact: There are doctors who will perform “vanity” procedures for money including Lasik, and now, to some extent, changing color. For as many patients whose eyesight is improved, thousands are destroyed by laser, incurring serious damage that is permanent. Worst News for Patients: Lasik is so lucrative, that many states now allow Opticians to perform Lasik. Opticians are not medical doctors. Lasik is a medical procedure. Go figure. Protect your eyesight. Don’t point a laser at it. Buy fabulous glasses instead.

  • Lorenavasquez

This surgery is so awesome. I love it.
I even think I look way better now than how I did before. (:

  • Ronaldlinden 82

Boy you make my brown eye’s blue

  • Dorian

Blue eyes are basically eyes with no pigment, however green eyes occurs when the blue eyes has a bit of yellow pigment which turns them into green eyes.. so it’s tricky

  • Alayna-

this is insane , people are crazy damn.

  • Erika

People can have black eyes thank you very much my older brother has black eyes because he went to the eye doctor to see if he could get black contacts and they asked why, you already have black eyes.

  • Brittney

I’m a 17 year old blonde girl and I have really really ocean blue eyes and everyone i come across tells me that my eyes are gorgeous but i despise them. Is it possible to go from blue to brown?

  • Lex

Dont you people ever think… what happens when you get ur eyes green or blue and then one day miss YOUR eye color. You were born with it for a reason. Colored contacts are fun because it’s like a magical change for the day or however long you wear them. Getting it permanently done on the other hand… a bit over the top. Your eyes are the color that they are because they are a part of who you are. Learn to love yourself people!

I’m afraid black eyes in human beings is real.  Look up a medical condition called anirdia.

I agree, there is no such thing as ‘black’ eyes.. those don’t exist, however, there are extremely dark brown eyes that appear black, if you take a flashlight put it to your eye you will see brown, not black. Sounds like maybe a little bit of googling on eye colors is needed for some of us.

I have dark brown eyes and wondering if you have to strip all the color down to base blue or can you strip natural looking partial revealing less blue and more mixed calor something like a different kind of hazel.. I am very interested in the proceedure .                                                                                    Aleyes

  • Emilia Anotoni

I have brown eyes.I think 5 grand is way too much to spend on ONLY blues. If it were like three colors at once I could understand but ONLY blue? The blue in the picture poked grey not blue.I believe this is a waste of money unless you are obsessed with blue eyes.Anyways………..What would happen if something went wrong? It’s too much of a risk and too much money………..I believe people should keep their natural color and wear colored contacts if they want their eyes colored.
    Thank You!!

You can only have black eyes if you have a disease. There’s no normal black eyes, that’s dark brown. If it was a doctor he should know that.

  • October

Really? You want the most common eye color in the world? You want to take something beautiful and turn it common and hideous? Be fucking thankful for what you have and stop complaining.

  • Brown is better!

Blue eyes like mine are often extremely sensitive to the sun. Very light blue eyes run in my family. I live in Southern California and I have to wear dark sunglasses and a hat all the time. I avoid going outside in the middle of the day. The sun actually hurts my eyes- and the screens on my phone, computer, etc are starting to bother me too. I get very bad headaches if I am not careful…or even if I just spend a whole day outside. My mom and her sisters have all had cataract surgery and they are only in their early 60s.
The extra melanin (?) in brown eyes protects eyes from the light. Why anyone would want
remove it is beyond all reason. Having blue eyes is like being an albino with very pale skin.

  • Lucas_unicoeoriginal

Totally amazing this american man is awesome he is revolutionary genius, i want change mine to green or blue! thanks to this man hes bright!

  • anon

I always laugh when people say they have “black” eyes… and you can easily buy “black” contacts. they sell them at halloween stores.

  • October

No, read the article and understand how the procedure works. It isn’t that difficult. They aren’t putting anything IN. The are taking pigmentation OUT. And behind that color is another color. So they aren’t tailoring your eye color, they are literally just removing the color.

Like how a lot of babies are born with blue eyes, and then it changes over time, it’s added pigmentation. This surgery just removes it.

  • Tina Decosta88

I’d like greenish-brown eyes, as mine are dark brown.. wonder if they could do that..

They’re still in the testing phase, but I understand that the procedure uses very low energy and that the laser doesn’t ever enter the eye, so the risks are low.

  • Carlos (Med Student)

The melanin that protects your eyes from the sun is in the inside of your eyes.  This procedure only removes pigment from the outside surface of your eyes, so it has no effect on light sensitivity.

  • Carlos (Med Studenht)

They use a small laser beam and scan it over the entire iris, so they can program it to create any patten they want, leaving brown in some places, and not others.

Regarding Black iris pigmentation- We all have either brown or black irises. It’s varying intensity of light or dark brown, but black is indeed possible. People with blue or green eyes just have less melanin (lighter brown eyes) which makes their eyes reflect light in a different way causing the illusion of colour. More melanin = darker eyes, and therefor less light reflection. It’s the reason this surgery can only go from brown to blue- he is removing melanin.
Here is more in depth answer…”In humans, the pigmentation of the iris varies from light brown to black, depending on the concentration of melanin in the iris pigment epithelium (located on the back of the iris), the melanin content within the iris stroma (located at the front of the iris), and the cellular density of the stroma. The appearance of blue, green, as well as hazel eyes results from the Rayleigh scattering of light in the stroma, a phenomenon similar to that which accounts for the blueness of the sky. Neither blue nor green pigments are ever present in the human iris or ocular fluid.  Eye color is thus an instance of structural color and varies depending on the lighting conditions, especially for lighter-colored eyes.”

  • ArcaneWriter

What would happen if someone with blue eyes got this surgery?  Would it turn into an albino-color (red).  I ask this because I already have blue eyes & I’d get one done for aesthetic reasons

  • Guapero13

If this process is a removal of the brown pigment in the iris what would happen to me considering that my eyes were originally green as a baby but turned brown? Would they turn back to green or would they turn blue? Any oppinions? ( by the way I wouldn’t do this without 99.9% safety guaranteed….. And a drop in price) =D

  • Guapero13

Although that would we certainly interesting I don’t think that’s what would happen. In my opinion anyway. I dont see blue turning into red as possible, but what do I know.

“Very dark brown” Is usually in the shadows considered black, Something being black “coloured” is proposterous to begin with as black is not a colour…However when people have very dark eyes in the shade of brown they usually describe them as black cause it is easier and you probably knew that already..If you want to be nitpicky. Do it properly.

60% of people getting LASIk are successful leaving 40% that aren’t and increased knowledge that the lasers used in LASIK eventually damage the rentina. Another concern is macular degeneration. Lasers from my experience damage things like fat under the skin, especially ultrasound LED. WHAT MAKES THIS LASER TREATEMENT SAFER THAN LASIK? That 40% did not include the rising knowledge of retinal damage occurring in many maybe 10 years after the surgery.
