Map Displaying Who in the World Googles the Term “Zombies”

The Oxford Internet Institute created the above map to show just what parts of the world reference the term “zombies” by way of their Googling habits. As one can see from the map, most of the world doesn’t care about the living dead trend, though as one might have been able to guess, the higher concentration of zombie fascination is located primarily in the Anglophone world, in population areas of higher concentration, such as big cities. Interestingly, Africa barely has any zombie interested, even though that is from where the word originates. Sadly, the data visualization doesn’t let us know when the zombie fad will end. Maybe when zombies are actually a real thing and we’re all too busy running from them or being dead to casually Google the term. Head on past the break to check out a larger version of the map.

    Interesting, but a few points/questions:
    1) Continental Europe (the massive landmass to the right of the UK that is lit up like a Christmas tree) is not traditionally referred to as ‘English-speaking’. Furthermore, neither is Japan. So I guess what the analysis shows is a dozen or so countries, one of which is the United States, all speaking VERY different languages and having different cultures, appear to use Google to learn more about zombies…
    2) Australia likes to consider itself part of the English speaking world, and it appears only Melbourne and Sidney are actually worried about zombie infestation (or the rest of of Australia haven’t figure out how to use Google yet…). But I take your point – Australians aren’t very good at English. “Swagman”? “Billabong”? And what the f*ck is a “tucker bag”?
    3) What is Internet access like in the middle of Africa, central Asia, and the Arctic Circle? Any evidence of restrictions on Internet access in China…? Is it possible that all you’ve stumbled upon is a map of “who uses Google”?

I apologize for sounding like a kill joy, but these points/questions will be important to helping us know what nations will be most likely to survive the inevitable zombie apocalypse. I, for one, am not confident in Venezuala’s preparedness. Perhaps if the IMF and the World Bank started worrying about these more important issue this map would be a much redder place.

    Awesome work.
