Marvel’s Killing Off Another Prominent Character, Promises They’re Serious This Time

It’s pretty much become a tradition for Marvel and DC Comics to kill off a major character every few years when they’ve decided they would like some publicity. Sometimes, they even kill off characters that died previously for similar reasons. There are a few instances where the death remains justified and seems to stick for long periods of time, Gwen Stacy comes to mind, but usually it just feels like another ploy to get folks to cough up some money. Marvel’s apparently doing it again, though, and says it’s going to stick.

The big reveal is that Scott Summers, known as Cyclops, will be offing his substitute father figure Charles Xavier. Professor X will be meeting his doom in Avengers vs. X-Men #11, out today, and is supposedly staying that way. Topless Robot sums up why Marvel thinks this time is different:

  • Because Cyclops, as a member of the Phoneix Force, kills him. “He needed to be the casualty in this story. There’s no more oh-sh– moment that you can bring than having a son killing his father,” said Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso.
  • Because it’s going to “last,” apparently. “This is about as serious and lasting a death as you’re apt to get in one of these,” said Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.
  • Because Professor X is complete unnecessary nowadays anyways. “He was this thing that was just floating around the X-books, with not the same amount of gravitas that he once had,” said writer Brian Michael Bendis.

Maybe his death will actually have some kind of lasting effect. That, or, we’ll find out he’s alive right before the next X-Men movie.

Who knew that Superman had BLOOD? Actually, the real reason Lois Lane is in tears is because he wore that uniform without changing it for seventy years. P-U.

Didn’t Xavier die in Messiah Complex?

Give it a year or two and he’ll walk it off, come back but be back in his floating wheel chair with subtle X’s in its design. Or they’ll pull a Thor and have him hidden in plain sight and the other X-Men will have to search for him when Cyclops goes all Dark SIth on every one

No, he got shot and lost some of his memory and went on a journey to piece it back together in X-Men Legacy

He was killed once already; Which caused that whole other X-Verse. The one where cyclops only and one eye and Wolverine had one hand.

[mouthbreathing nerd] He has been walking in main continuity for some time now, and was walking when Cyclops “killed” him in AvX #11. [/mouthbreathing nerd]
