Jackbox Games has a decidedly well-earned reputation for creating content with a great sense of humor, which you’re well aware of if you’ve ever played You Don’t Know Jack. Now they’ve teamed up with Netflix to bring you Max, a program on the Playstation 3 that selects new titles for you to watch using a series of different games. Unfortunately, there’s no Elephant, Mustard, Teddy Roosevelt or Dracula? feature, which is odd considering some of the categories Netflix already uses are similarly weird.
In the above video, Senior Manager of Product Innovation Pedro Freitas goes through the mini-games that Max uses to suggest the best TV show or movie for you, including the Rating Game and Celebrity Mood Ring. Once you’ve been given a recommendation, Max also supplies you with a handy 30-second summary of the TV show or movie it’s given you. There’s also a mystery feature, where Max chooses something on its own based on what it knows about you and offers it up without explaining what it is.
This has been in the works for a while, according to Vice President of Product Innovation Todd Yellin: Netflix and Jackbox (then still called Jellyvision) first thought to collaborate on Max back in 2007 and began working on it in 2011. Unlike You Don’t Know Jack, Max isn’t available on any other platforms yet, but Netflix plans to introduce them into the mix soon.
