Mojang Working With LEGO to Make Official LEGO Minecraft Sets

Minecraft is basically cyber-LEGOs in spirit. Granted, there have been plenty of other attempts at creating cyber-LEGOs, all of which were questionably successful. However, none of them took off the way Minecraft did. Now, it seems like Minecraft might have a chance to retcon its history, so to speak, and get its own, official LEGO playsets. Mojang is working with LEGO through the CUUSOO system to get several different models made and hopefully open the door to more Minecraft LEGOs down the road.

Through the CUUSOO system, basically anybody can get LEGO to consider producing a set if they can get 10,000 people to support the idea. If the idea is accepted, LEGO will put out the set and give the creator a 1% royalty on sales. Mojang has already said they’ll donate their 1% to charity because they’re cool like that, and also fairly rich as it is.

At the moment, the idea has about 600 or so supporters, but it rolled out fairly recently, so that number is only going to go up. Given Minecraft‘s rabidly devoted fanbase, it’s only a matter of time before we reach 10,000, and given Mojang’s support and the marketing power of the Minecraft name, it’s only a matter of time before LEGO accepts the idea.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m starting to get excited at the prospect of building my first LEGO set in upwards of a decade. I just hope they make an arctic biome one, or at least a taiga one.
