NASA Debunks Comet Elenin Rumors, No Armageddon Here

You know the Internet is getting carried away with itself when NASA has to issue a press release just to assure everyone that we aren’t facing armageddon. What seems to be a rather insignificant story about a comet passing close (but not too close) to Earth has gotten wrapped up in doomsday predictions and run-for-the-hills hysteria. Never fear, life as we know it isn’t about to end. At least, not from anything that has to do with the Comet Elenin, which is set to pass by Earth some 22 million miles (35 million kilometers) away during its closest approach on Oct. 16, 2011.

The comet, more formally known as C/2010 X1, was first detected on Dec. 10, 2010 by Leonid Elenin in Lyuberts, Russia using images obtained from an observatory in New Mexico. Since then, Comet Elenin has been on track to pass by Earth on its way to perihelion, its closest point to the sun. While television and movies have made comets approaching Earth something to be incredibly weary about, NASA reports that there will be no influence in any way on Earth due to the comet’s passing.

NASA was bombarded with so many questions from people anticipating annihilation that they felt it necessary to issue a special press release to point people in the direction of a question and answer document compiled by NASA scientists. Don Yeomans of NASA’s Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and David Morrison of the NASA Astrobiology Institute at the NASA Ames Research Center answered questions related to the comet and dispelled fears about its approach.

Yeomans says:

“Comet Elenin will not only be far away, it is also on the small side for comets, and comets are not the most densely-packed objects out there. They usually have the density of something akin to loosely packed icy dirt. So you’ve got a modest-sized icy dirtball that is getting no closer than 35 million kilometers [about 22 million miles). It will have an immeasurably minuscule influence on our planet. By comparison, my subcompact automobile exerts a greater influence on the ocean’s tides than comet Elenin ever will.”

Other rumors about the comet that the scientists debunk include the idea that the comet will cause three days of total darkness on Earth, that the comet will have a brown dwarf effect that will alter the course of other objects in space, and that NASA itself is covering up the “truth” about the comet.

The scientists also point to the fact that the information about Comet Elenin was never a secret, it just wasn’t talked about widely because, well, these things happen often enough with no consequences that it isn’t really news — until people start freaking out that we’re all going to die, then its news and we get NASA press releases saying everybody calm down. So, everybody calm down, it’s just a comet.

That said, what’s really going on?

@3217f2a35690c637f4848716ca0470f5:disqus The article cannot be clearer. The comet is tiny and will pass by from a very great distance. These sort of events happen all the time and do0 not affect the Earth. That is what is really going on. Throughout my life these minor comets have come and gone and if you read astronomy journals they are not a big deal.

oh hey people…..lookie what I got in my hand here….something shiny to distract you from our REAL  issues at hand!

Leonid Elelin does not exist. It is a cover name. ‘Leo’ is because the comet is coming from the constellation ‘Leo’. The whole project is overseen by the ‘NID’ or National Institute of Defense. And Elenin is an acronym for ‘Extinction Level Event Near Impact Nibiru’. Or maybe I am just crazy!

  • Misstasha

Don’t stress bros, wer all gonna be fine!! (:

  • Maperki

Anybody ask what the comet will do to Mercury? (look at the NASA image…)

Leonid Elenin does exist, he debunked the rumors as well

Do you actually belive NASA would tell us if something catastrophic is headed our way?  NASA is controlled by the Government and Comet Elenin is headed our way. While elenin may just be a comet, there is something behind it, that is 4X5 times larger than Jupiter but you cant see it because it is in the daytime sky.  Why is Nasa looking at elenin twice a week if it or the thing behind it is of no concern?  I believe a magnetic storm is headed our way, and surrounds the object behind elenin.  Remember the Government wants us to die, and wants the population to be reduced to less than 500 million from 7 billion.  So take anything NASA says with a grain of salt.  They are so worried about this event, they closed their chat room and shut down their telescope to online amateurs.  Yeah, elenin is nothing!! But what is BEHIND elenin?  HMMM  A false flag alien attack engineered by our OWN Government?? Obama does need something to boost his ratings but dont think he would stoop down to this level.  hmmmm

What is odd, and this I do know, they are building underground shelters all over the world as a “just in case.” NASA would never tell us if a comet, astroid etc would maybe hit is. You think the economy is bad now, the economy would without doubt crast.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault was not made because we think humanity would ever be threatened.  We are not indestrucable.

The information in this image came from this document http://arxiv.org/pdf/1104.2036 (couldn’t cut-n-paste). I will be the first to say correlation is not causation, but tell me these are wrong…

  • Dondep

You are soooo right, Billybog.  Small-skulled dimbulbs worldwide are naively clinging to the newly-created online ‘identity’ of said Leo, but critical thinkers will recall the movie “Deep Impact” in which an astronomer named “Leo” comes across the secret project named “Ellie”  (for ELE….Extinction Level Event), and the “coincidences” go on from there.  Don’t stress the dimbulbs; the interested few with eyes and ears open hear you.

  • Dondep

Sorry “Billybob”; don’t know how that typo got in there!  I’m sure you took the recent east-coast earthquake in stride, knowing its real cause, as well as its twin in Colorado, also a record-breaker.  Now Irene is bearing down on the eastern seaboard, and even if it doesn’t cause as much damage as is being drummed into the urbanites of Bos-Wash, it’s a good practice run for when they really WILL have to evacuate the cities for higher ground.

This article fails to mention YU55 travelling alongside Elenin.

YU55 will pass by 85% of the way between Earth and the Moon, less than
250 000 km (Here is the NASA article:
    http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news171.html)

This is the closest pass of a comet that size to Earth (400m in
Diameter, equivalent to a couple of nukes in Energy) modern history.

YU55 will pass us on the 8th November.

On the 9th November, FEMA and the FCC have stated that they will be
taking over all broadcasting in the states to test the EAS or Emergency
    Alert System (http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=55722).

They are mostly correct in saying Elenin does not pose a threat, it is
YU55 we need to bear in mind when looking for threat dates.

They also failed to mention that Elenin is composed mostly of Hydrogen
Cyanide which is a natural insulator, which results in Elenin possibly
becoming a massive cosmic capacitor, releasing large amounts of energy
at certain key points, defined by the strength of electromagnetic
fields. These times are 11th September (closest point to the Sun), 26th
September (aligned with Earth and the sun)…. I’m not too sure about
this whole capacitive effect or if it will really affect us, yet the
research is there. Also, we will pass through Elenin’s tail from the 3rd
Nov to 11th Nov, there are numerous risks here which one can research.

But the main threat lies with YU55. Why is it a threat if it’s not going
to hit us? Well although the following 2 points hold for both Elenin
and YU55, YU55 will be astronomically closer than Elenin, hence any
    effects will be amplified.

    1) Certain comets through out history are extremely dynamic in many scary ways on an approach to another large celestial body.

    2) The mass of Elenin and YU55 are unknown, which is the key to any orbital path or space-time trajectory.

Also, lol, the article doesn’t debunk Elenin, rather it aims at debunking doomsday theories.

  • Brad

YU55 will be one of the closest approaches ever seen by modern man.

If you want to calm them down, someone needs to explain to everyone why a rectangular dark spot is covering where Elenin is supposed to be. Check Google sky under the infrared setting or anybother similar site. The explanation so far has been it’s a glitch that has persisted for a long time and happens to involve just the area where Elenin is. Check the leg of Leo.

Now who is the silly willy? Although I highly doubt NASA would tell the world about it, we could not miss the sudden “vacations” planned by all the powerful and rich people in the know as they retreat to their 12/21/12 bunkers they built needlessly.
