Nuclear Fission Modeled with Hundreds of Ping-Pong Balls and Mousetraps

Didn’t have Mr. Wizard to explain nuclear reactions to you as a tot? The students at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland are here to help: When they throw one ping-ping ball into a setup of 300 mousetraps and 600 ping-pong balls, it becomes clear why one measly little trigger can set off a massive, high-energy fission chain reaction.

This was done in the 60s in a Disney short.

Clearly. We didn’t do this to be the FIRST. We did it because it was fun, it brought the science to life, and it was meant to be presented at the school’s science fair. Pointing out that we didn’t do it first really means nothing. And it doesn’t take away from the fact that we were able to accomplish something.

and perfected by a bunch of kids in 2011! Besides, the year was 1957 that you are thinking of. Also, the nice man hired by Wally to be his science chief, and who is on the film, is none other then Heinz Haber who spent WWII performing high speed/altitude flight tests on concentration camp prisoners who were later killed, then dissected by Haber himself. Thats good old Walt Disney for you!
