Yakul is the antelope steed of Ashitaka, the hero of Haiyo Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. (Insofar as anyone can be called the "hero" of Princess Mononoke given its adherence to the Kurosawan ideal that "the moral of the story is: Everyone is wrong.")
The Red Antelope are the traditional mounts of Ashitaka's dwindling forest tribe, and when his brush with demonic forces require that he be banished from his home, never to meet anyone who shares his traditions ever again, Ashitaka at least has Yakul to be with him.
