Zenn-La was spared destruction by the appetites of Galactus when its inhabitant, Norrin Radd, offered to become his herald in exchange for sparing the planet and its civilization. Thus the Silver Surfer was born. When, inspired by the nobility of Earth's heroes, he attempted to keep Galactus from consuming the planet's life, the Devourer of Worlds imprisoned the Surfer within the confines of Earth's atmosphere as punishment for his betrayal. In addition, Galactus considered their original pact annulled, and so returned to Zenn-La. He allowed five hundred Zenn-Lavians to escape on star-ships before consuming all life left on the planet, rendering it a barren wasteland. The remaining Zenn-Lavians returned a few months later, to begin the task of rebuilding their civilization.
