In Final Fantasy VI, the Cult of Kefka arose after the cult's titular villain brought upon the Apocalypse and basically ended the world, gaining enough power to become a god. A large portion of the Apocalypse's survivors decided it'd be better to give Kefka their souls rather than risk a smiting from his Light of Judgment (a magical energy beam that could destroy entire villages in one go) and formed the cult.
Aside from carrying out Kefka's bidding, they're responsible for building and guarding the Tower of Fanatics, an evil gauntlet devoid of save points that houses the game's most powerful items. Considering the cultists follow a tyrannical god that isn't happy with simply destroying the world and ruling the remains, but decides he's going to destroy everything, they're a pretty powerful bunch of robed fiends who are somehow even powerful enough to break the fourth wall and avoid the merciful institution of save points.
