As the giant turtle, the Great A'Tuin, hurtled toward a giant red star surrounded by eight moons carrying the Discworld on its back, a portion of the world's population freaked out and began to look toward a fanatical man named Dahoney. He preached that the red star was coming to purify the Disc of its wickedness, and that he and his followers should begin the purification process early by killing all of the world's "lesser" races and wizards, burning every book of magic and destroying the world's shrines to the various gods because the gods hadn't protected the Disc from the red star. He also decided it'd be best to just kill everyone else who wasn't in the cult.
Death looked down upon the Star People's ideals and claimed it was something he didn't understand. When even Death doesn't understand killing, that probably speaks to the level of insanity involved.
