When it comes to animated mouse heroes, it is very hard to top Basil of Baker Street. With his trusty side-kick Dawson, keen intellect, and an almost pathological need to seek out danger, Basil can take on any Victorian era anthropomorphized opponent – even one that uses clockwork robots.
Unusual for a Disney hero is Basil's slightly manic-depressive behavior. In the blink of an eye he'll concoct, construct, and execute an elaborate plan to identify a gun from the burn pattern on a bullet, only to be laid low with depression when he's proven wrong. But it doesn't take much to get him on his feet again. The offer of an intriguing case, for instance. One that will bring him up against one of the greatest villains in Disney history: Professor Ratigan.
Imagine the over-the-top ambition of a James Bond villain in the body of a rat, with a barely contained psychotic rage, and voiced by none other than Vincent Price.
With his mood swings, his brilliance, and atop Toby (the dog), Basil gives any detective that might bear a passing resemblance to a certain intellectual property owned by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle a run for his money.
