Alfred Pennyworth was a Shakespearean actor, a British secret service agent, and a combat medic.  He might have stuck with any of these careers, but his family had been in the service of the Wayne family for generations, and with his father's death, Alfred returned to Wayne Manor.  He was the Wayne's butler when Bruce was born, and yet still, when Thomas and Martha died.  

So, yeah.  Alfred is Batman's butler.  He's also his triage surgeon, confidant, and used to change his diapers.  He is also, let us stress, a father of some kind to every single member of the Bat-family.  Though Bruce was never able to deal with his parents' death in any kind of normal way, Alfred has many times kept him from descending into true madness.  He has served as mentor to three to five different Robins, depending on how you count them, some Batgirls, and pretty much anyone else who comes through the cave.   

There was a brief story arc in the now cancelled Gotham Knights series, where Alfred became greviously ill from the mutated Clench virus.  In a wordless scene by Scott Beaty, Cassandra Cain, the mute Batgirl, searches for a get well card in some Gotham convenience store.  Even with the help of a clerk, none of the cards seem to be written for the specific relationship between her and Alfred.  She eventually choses a blank one, and writes "I will be sad until you are well again."
