Ah, the hammer.
It wasn't until Super Mario Bros. that Mario perfected the Koopa crushing power of his jump. What, then, would "Jumpman" use to defeat the merciless onslaught of barrels that that damned gorilla was throwing his way? The hammer, of course! The hammer was the little bit of kindness that the incredibly cruel game designers gave the player. It meant just a few seconds of relative safety. However, it always came at the worst possible moment in the game. Construction workers climb ladders while holding hammers all the time! Why the hell can't Mario?
The hammer would return at the end of the 90s (along with its classic theme music!) in Super Smash Bros. It now, however, had the ability to knock characters clear off the planet. God, we would have loved to have that ability back in the arcade...
