Robin Hood is one of the most famous figures in English folklore, and like any figure of folklore, he is shrouded in mystery and his depictions are mostly glorified with popular convention. So heed the disclaimer-ish phrasing in this brief account of the hero.
Robin Hood may or may not have been a thief who may or may not have stolen from the rich and given to the poor. His hideout may or may not have been in Sherwood forest and his nemesis may or may not have been the Sheriff of Nottingham. Also, according to childhood movie memories, he may or may not have been a fox.
Robin and his merry men were said to be master archers who gleefully resisted authority and challenged the status quo. His true home and origins are unknown, and the nature of his thievery is equally mysterious. But one thing is for certain: He was a man in tights.
