The Feast of Winter Veil was one of the first in-game holidays to be implemented in World of Warcraft, bringing another healthy dollop of whimsy into a game that rarely wastes a moment to make a subtle joke of itself. In game, it's a chance for a bunch of goblin vendors to cash in big on selling cooking supplies, candy, and beer to consumer-minded adventurers, drawn by the promise of achievements and a bit of quest gold, largely ignoring the lone dwarf and tauren NPCs.
These two kindred souls on either side of the war's divide will each press a book into your hands which explains that the holiday is basically a traditional yule celebration. Great-father Winter, far from being a guy in a suit accepting gingerbread and glasses of milk, was originally thought to be a powerful spirit who blanketed the world with freezing snow each year, but who would reward those who welcomed his icy gift with more tangible bounty in later seasons. Hence the traditional snow ball fights, snowmen-making, and feasting elements of Winter Veil.
The dwarves and tauren hold the origins of the holiday most dearly, while other races have pretty much co-opted the whole thing to get drunk and give each other gifts. Oh, and to kill low level birds. All those gingerbread cookies take eggs, and hens in Azeroth are pretty much barren.
