The Batman movie franchise began in '89, inspired largely by a new trend of antiheroes in comics, contrasting sharply with the last film version of Batman that the mainstream had ever seen: Adam West and Burt Ward in Batman (1966). So in one way, you could say that even Tim Burton's first mainstream blockbuster Batman was, itself, a reboot. Nevertheless, eight years later Joel Schumacher had driven the franchise into the ground by building a couple of lavish, ill-plotted and worse dialogue-ed monuments to that very colorful, camp-filled 1960's television show.
And George Clooney was absolutely ruined for any superhero role for years. Which is really too bad because look at that chin. Ten years from now, in a perfect world, we might be able to see him play an aging Bruce Wayne in the movie version of Kingdom Come.
Anyway. Sure, Batman Begins was just Warner Bros. looking at the success of Spider-Man and The X-Men and wanting some of that sweet, sweet, licensed property money. But they hired some people who 1) actually wanted to make it, and 2) had an idea of Batman that actually meshed with what current comic book fans were actually reading.
But just you wait. There will likely be another Batman reboot within our lifetimes. Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale say The Dark Knight Rises is their last one, but Warner Bros. is never going to want to stop making money.
