Once the bastard child of the Sci-Fi con-going community, the show that could be most easily explained as "That thing that isn't Star Wars," BSG's shocking rise to prominence with a 2003 miniseries reboot has made it the poster child for geek chic. The old show in fact ran into trouble when it was sued by 20th Century Fox for infringing on Star Wars' copyrighted ideas like a roguish spice pilot wearing striped pants and space ships with pointed noses and front pointing wings.
The 2003 miniseries, with its thrilling space battles, hot robots, space opera drama, hot robots, ethical quandaries, and hot robots took geeks by storm, and the SciFi channel realized that if they made a whole TV series out of it, people might actually watch. (Leading the actress who played President Laura Roslin to be expecting her character to drop dead of cancer any season now…)
The series was a testament to what can be done with good writing and an exciting, compelling story, even if you've already got a known brand to stand on top of. That, and a rabid fanbase. The only question now is not whether BSG will continue to be successful, but how long “frak” will be the nerd-word of choice.
