“A blond Bond? Impossible!” That was my mom’s reaction, at least.
Casino Royale was the first Bond movie to star Daniel Craig as well as the first ever Bond reboot. Maybe because the first Casino Royale was a humorous satire of the James Bond novels instead of an official Bond movie. The new Casino Royale would scrap the old Bond franchise continuity and become closer to Ian Fleming's actual novel. The novel that introduced James Bond to audiences, before he got his “License to Kill.” Yeah, the origin story.
Casino Royale also signaled a slight change from recent Bond installments which used heavy CGI and special effects, instead turning to more practical stuntwork and more scientific realism. What’s interesting, however, is how when the original movie came out, there were no “Bond movie purists” to get too upset about David Niven playing a satirical Bond on the internet. But when Daniel Craig was cast, there was a widespread fan protest claiming that he didn’t fit the “tall, dark, and handsome” mold. So, Daniel Craig was unacceptable, but the guy who was cool enough to riff on a streaker …okay, that was pretty unflappable, wasn’t it? Internet. Come on.
