The Spectre is as old as the universe. Unfortunately, this makes his age a bit more than our Power Grid can handle. He is a spiritual entity (some have said angel) representing the avenging wrath of god, who must who must take a recently demised human guide (some have said host) to use as a moral lens with which to find injustice. He does this in atonement, for his choice of a side in the war between Heaven and Hell.
His avatars have included private eye Jim Corrigan, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, and Gotham City Police Detective Crispus Allen. His powers are, canonically, completely limitless, and he has used them to stand toe to toe with some of the most powerful beings to ever threaten the universe, nearly strip magic out of existence, and perform the Plague of the Firstborn. He is also one of the few characters in DC continuity who remains aware of the events of the Crisis on Infinite Earths.
