There isn't really much that's mythical about Sir Francis Drake, we'll admit. The guy was a pretty historically documented total badass. A pirate to the Spanish, a knight of England, a favorite of Queen Elizabeth, leader of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada, circumnavigator of the globe, and more.
But there's still the matter of his drum. A snare drum emblazoned with his coat of arms that traveled around the world with him and was in his possession at his death. He ordered that it be taken back to England (it remains on display in Plymouth), saying that if the country was ever in danger that someone should beat the drum and he would return to defend it. Legend has it that the drum has been heard to play itself when the Mayflower left Plymouth, when Napoleon was brought to England as a prisoner, when World War I began, and when the German Navy surrendered at the end of that war.
It has also been noted that during the Blitz, when the drum was removed from Plymouth due to damage of the abbey that housed it, the town was then razed in the air raids that followed. The drum was returned and the city was not raided for the duration of the war.
