Mister Miracle, otherwise known as Scott Free, is one of the Earth's most celebrated escape artists.
This is because he grew up in arguably the worst circumstances the DC Universe has to offer: under the tortuous gaze of Granny Goodness in the pits of Apokolips. Apokolips' totalitarian god-king Darkseid and the leader of the planet New Genesis struck a peace treaty, the conditions of which involved trading sons. Scott Free became the only person to ever escape from Granny Goodness, Darkseid's chief enforcer and drill sergeant, and fled with his future wife Big Barda to Earth, where they tried to make a life for themselves apart from Apokoliptian and New Genesian politics.
He is also in good company on the short list of actual DC characters who appeared in Sandman (and in the first story-arc, no less!). Oh, and about all the names… listen. The new gods were created by a Silver Age Jack Kirby run amok in DC continuity.
And I don't care what anyone says. Darkseid is an awesome villain, like if Darth Vader and the Emperor were the same guy and were also a god.
