One of the biggest problems that retrofuturist works can run into is attaching themselves to a firm date. 2001: A Space Odyssey ran in to it hard.
As it is with many items on this list, the decline of space exploration programs all over the world has lead to their failures as predictions. Even now, nine years later, we are not capable, as a species, of sending a manned mission to Jupiter or building a permanent base on the Moon. And that's all very sad.
But we also haven't created malevolent computer intelligences capable of prioritizing their own existence over that of the humans around them, so I guess it all comes out in the wash.
