The central conceit of Jules Verne's 1863 novel about Paris in the 1960's is that humanity, despite its state of remarkable technological advancement, has devolved culturally into a state where literature, aestheticism, and the arts are all but forgotten. The main character, a poet, is forced to abandon his chosen career as a writer and instead work for a bank.Oh, yeah, that would never happen!

Anyway -- Verne did manage to get a lot of things right! Calculators! Televisions! The electric chair! But, yeah, the part about an underground group of bohemians who exist on the edges of an vulgar industrial society by choice was pretty off the mark.
