The Galactic Republic ruled for over 25,000 years, and that's a lot of history. But we're not here to talk about the government that rose against he Hutt Empire and fought off the Sith. Twice.
We're here to talk about the corrupt body politic that handed Darth Sidious control of their assembly on the suggestion of a fourteen year old leader of a backwater world in the Chommell sector. The political assembly that then handed their leader an army of unknown origin, so that he could defend the republic against a commercial trade organization that the Senate had neglected to keep in check; a trade organization that blockaded, and kidnapped the rulers of, unassuming planets in the Republic. The Galactic Senate remained utterly clueless to their face when a Sith Lord proclaimed his imperial rule over the galaxy.
To quote perhaps the only eloquent line from the Star Wars prequels: "So this is how liberty dies... to thunderous applause."
