While Final Fantasy has its share of butt-kicking female protagonists, the male and/or gender-neutral beasts tend to hog all of the coolness among summons: See: half-naked Shiva.
Which is why it was cool for FFX to change pace and make by far the most powerful summon not one, but three female insects: The Magus Sisters give you the ridiculous advantages of teamwork, basically replacing your party with a really good summoned party, and insane, limit-breaking multihit attacks (e.g. "Passado"). They've come a long way from paper-thin jokey sprites.
