Kratos, eat your heart out, because Garion was here first. Garion, short for Belgarion, is the main character of David Eddings' epic five-book series The Belgariad. He is a distant descendant of two immortal magic-wielders who raise him from a very young age. But before long, Garion discovers that Destiny intends more for him than just life on a farm. He is caught up in a quest to find an ancient and powerful Orb reserved for the pure of soul.
Not only that, but he has to kill an evil god (see what we did there with the Kratos thing?) in order to prevent a long, bloody war. Oh, and he also is destined to become king, which he does. Then his son is kidnapped to become the central character of a new Dark Prophecy. There's a whole lot of fate going on up in The Belgariad. And you can tell just how heroically Garion achieves his destiny by the long list of epithets he accrues: King of Riva, Overlord of the West, Lord of the Western Sea, Keeper of the Orb of Aldur, Child of Light, and, most bad-ass of all, Godslayer.
