So there's, like, this rock, right? And King Uther Pendragon died and whoever can pull this sword out of this rock is the rightful king of England. Then this young kid Arthur, an orphan training to be a squire, is all like "Hey look, I did it!" and then he becomes the king of England, which was always his Destiny. The Destiny of Arthur is truly intertwined with that of Merlin, and the two served as a duo fated to bring a peaceful reign back to the kingdom. Merlin is often depicted as a mentor or advisor figure to Arthur, though certain depictions make him Arthur's subordinate. But no matter how you slice it, or what weapon you slice it with and what mineral you pulled that weapon out of, Arthur was always destined to become a great king, and then he indeed became one. He assembled the knights of Camelot and was beloved by his people.
Well, that's the story anyway. Recently historians have admitted that the Arthur myths were probably based on a real person. Beyond that... who knows? Archeologist Nowell Myres says: "No figure on the borderline of history and mythology has wasted more of the historian's time."
