Peter Jackson was a relatively unknown director when we all found out he had managed to get a major studio to give him $300,000,000 to make The Lord of the Rings. And then he did, showing us that good CGI doesn't jump at you with both fists screaming "I AM A SPECIAL EFFECT," and that it really does improve your audience's experience if you film on location and build the occasional actual set. Yes, I am looking at you, sir. For better or for worse, he showed everyone that if they played their cards right, they could get audiences to sit through a three hour movie. Also, he made the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences almost acknowlede the fact that it is the future now by seriously considering giving a Best Supporting Actor award to Andy Serkis. And even if you set aside all that, without Peter Jackson we never would have seen District 9. --SP
