The mastermind behind Magic: The Gathering has a Ph.D in mathematics and a background in combinatorics, which he put to good effect in designing a game of baffling complexity. Magic became a multi-million dollar industry unto itself, and as the first of the big CCGs, it spurred the movement of many millions more. And yes, Garfield proposed to his wife with the rarest of all Magic cards, "Proposal."
