In purely financial terms, Pokémon creator and Game Freak founder Satoshi Tajiri towers above most of the gaming industry: Pokémon is the second most profitable gaming series in history, behind only Super Mario. So it might come as a surprise that Tajiri's inspiration for the game was as personal -- even spiritual -- as it was: an avid insect collector who was nicknamed "Dr. Bug" when he was young, dreamt up the game as a way for children to experience his childhood thrills of collecting and exploring nature.
