As the other nominees on this list can attest, the geeky Best Picture nom has a long and storied history, but in some respects, the modern era of the mainstream, critically acclaimed geek movie begins with the Lord of the Rings series. With a steady hoofbeat of awards and nominations each year from 2001 to 2003 -- all three were nominated for Best Picture, and Return of the King won it in 2003 -- LoTR at once revolutionized CGI and provided in Gollum the bridge over the uncanny valley that Avatar needed, showed that a fantastic story could be long and uncompromised and still be a critical and commercial success, and taught Hollywood, finally, that geek movies are serious business.
