The Completely Ordinary sword is, of course, completely ordinary. But to a long time fantasy reader that can be incredibly unique.
A character who can succeed with a completely ordinary sword (or a suspiciously ordinary sword), well, that's just impressive. This is at least one reason why characters always counsel the bearer of the Sword of Martin in Redwall books that the sword is only as good as the person who wields it. Martin's sword is used as a symbol, a tool of morale, and a precious historical artifact, but not as a magical tool.
And then there's the Discworld's Captain Carrot: everyone pretty much knows that he's the long lost heir to the throne of Ank-Morpork, but the city is in pretty good (well, lawful neutral) hands, and given the circumstances he'd rather be a cop. His sword? Why, it's just a well-forged, well used blade. That he once shoved into a marble pillar, to the hilt.
