From the pearl you hold between your thumb and ring finger erupts a cloudy gray sphere of whirling air and howling wind that flies to attack your enemies.

Thus reads the flavor text for the infamous spell from Dungeons and Dragons 3.5. The original Defenestrating Sphere could be directed by its caster against their enemies. It might knock human-sized and smaller creatures prone, and if it did, it had a good change of sweeping them up about forty-five feet in the air and about eighteen feet horizontally in a random direction. If a creature encountered an immovable object in their trajectory (like a ceiling), they would take damage from the impact.

And that was it.

Many players who, like us, hold the word "defenestrate" dearly in our hearts, were annoyed that this spell description said nothing, nothing, about windows and the forcible ejection of our targets through them.

Fortunately, Wizards rectified this when they released The Spell Compendium, which contained many revisions to spell text and names. The sphere was given the small caveat that "if a window is within range, the subject is automatically thrown in that direction," making Defenestrating Sphere both useful and properly named.
