The Leviathans are a race of sentient biological space ships, created by mysterious beings known only as the Builders. They are definitely alive, however they may appear, and capable of performing all the basic functions you would expect from a sci-fi starship, including away pods and faster than light travel. The only thing they can’t do is mount an offense. They have no weapons systems.
Leviathans certainly embody the trope of biology as technology, but as we see in Farscape, the characters' beloved ship Moyra isn’t really that gross, at all. In fact, she’s kind of sweet.
