The Goo is a multi-million year old organism found by the main character of Fluke, or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings, by Christopher Moore. Essentially, it is what happens when a life form evolves to ecosystem dominance without ever relying on memetic storage, only genetic storage. It is so far divorced from the way evolution went in the rest of Earth's history that it is nearly incomprehensible to anything from that branch of evolution. In other words, an alien. But it did form a very special relationship with the only creatures in the ocean advanced enough to have memes: whales and dolphins.
As for its relative aesthetics, the main character lives for a while in a human colony that is located inside the Goo, and spends his time vaguely (if not extremely) nauseous at the fact that he doesn’t so much have a door in his apartment as an orifice. Don’t even ask about the bathroom and kitchen.
