A place, when used as a MacGuffin, is frequently just a location that everybody wants to get to. The good guys, the bad guys, and everybody in-between. It's possible that it has some strategic value (like the Tree of Souls in Avatar), or that it holds a more supernatural power (like Dogma's church), and often it is vitally important that the good guys get there first, resulting in a mad airship chase across the Sahara Desert.
Okay, well maybe that doesn't happen so often.
Otherwise, the Place as a MacGuffin can be the source of a truly epic confrontation that really comes down to a real estate deal. Like when Dream, of Neil Gaiman's Sandman, comes into possession of the key to Hell (seen above), or when Judge Doom wants to pave over Toontown.
...Is there some crossover potential there, or is that just me?
