What’s better than a MacGuffin that you can sell, trade, or rule a world with? A MacGuffin that doubles as an edged weapon. Handy for when all the other people after your MacGuffin catch up with you and your raiding party.
The Sword MacGuffin is usually an ancient artifact that may have sentimental, magical, or holy value. The sword in the stone (Excalibur) will make you the king of all England. Likewise, the Keyblade (Kingdom Hearts), the Mastersword (Legend of Zelda), and the Sword of Martin (Redwall) follow standard Lengendary Sword Protocol in that they bestow leadership and, sometimes, ephemeral powers on the bearer. A Weapon MacGuffin may signal a new, frightening age of technology (the Gonne of Terry Pratchett’s Men at Arms), or the coming of the Antichrist (the Lance of Longinus AKA the Spear of Destiny, as seen in Constantine, briefly in Hellboy, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and in every movie about Jesus, ever).
Watch out for sharp edges. -Z
