The meta-plot of box-office behemoth Titanic, thinly structured around images of young Kate Winslet and young Leonardo DiCaprio getting soaked with seawater, is, in fact, about the search for a pricey, enormous diamond necklace.
The jewelry need not have a finite market value, as a jewelry MacGuffin can also bear importance based on perceived worth, such as Death’s ankh (in Death: the High Cost of Living). It can also hold sentimental value, like the watch in Pulp Fiction that taught us that if you find yourself in an action movie, for godssake, don’t go to the bathroom. -Z
