Way before Dan Brown shocked the apparently quite forgetful Catholic world by suggesting that there might be some enjoyment to be had in entertaining the hypothetical notion that Jesus was not an only child or remained a virgin at his death, Kevin Smith did it with a fun little comedy called Dogma, in which the last descendent of Joseph and Mary was trying to keep two renegade angels from unmaking reality.
The premise of Dogma's geographic MacGuffin; the destination of the movie's race-to-a-place road trip plot, is a church in Smith's native New Jersey. The cardinal in Red Bank (George Carlin) has decided that on the diocese's 100 year anniversary it will make steps to become more modern and user friendly, and the first of these will be to offer plenary indulgence simply for stepping inside the church. That is to say, all you've got to do to get into heaven is enter the building (and then commit no further sins after leaving until you die). By obscure Catholic ruling, church law must be upheld by Heaven, and so this drive-through confession of sorts is deemed valid.
For two angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) who were cast out of heaven after drunkenly quitting the service of God (Alanis Morissette), this means that they can finally go home. However, as explained by the Voice of God (Alan Rickman), if they pass through those doors, it will undo the original ruling made about their banishment. Since one of the fundamental laws of the universe is that God is infallible and cannot be contradicted, reality itself would then unravel.
Even Jersey natives will agree, that if an ill-advised bureaucratic decision made by a small minded power junkie were ever to unmake the world, it might as well start here.
