There are many reasons why a person might not want to get involved with one of the Endless, the seven personifications of sentient life's most universal qualities. Not least because there is a universal law against mortals getting romantically involved with them, presumably enacted by a universe that was just trying not to have its shit get all messed up again.
The basic problem with dating Dream (and a few others on this list, like Dr. Manhattan) is that he's not human, and his perspective is radically, deathly different than yours.
He's also had some of the most epic sulks in the history of history.
His past paramours include one of the earliest inhabitants of the planet Oa; a Thessalian witch; the muse Calliope; and a poor woman called Nada, once the queen of what was possibly the first human civilization. Though she loved the Dream Lord, she knew it was forbidden for them to be together, and told him so. Though he knew of her love, and knew the law, as punishment for refusing him Dream destroyed her kingdom utterly, wiping it from the eyes of history. Then he imprisoned her in Hell, alive and immortal, until such time as he had forgiven her.
That didn't happen until the late 1980s.
