As the author of the Dragon Ball series, which sold over 120,000,000 copies in Japan, Akira Toriyama is indirectly responsible for the constellation of CCGs, video games, ill-advised live-action movies, and kids dubiously cosplaying as Goku. In short, DBZ has an inescapable influence not just on anime and manga, but on the broader culture surrounding them. It's easy to hate on the cash-in attempts (again: the live-action movie, which has a score of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes), but at the root of it all is a series with memorable characters, endlessly-imitated fight sequences, and a distinctive sense of humor to balance out the explosions and Kamehamehas. Toriyama also gets endless points for helping develop the flawless Super Nintendo RPG Chrono Trigger. If and when Toriyama's Dragon Ball MMORPG hits American shores, you may not be going outside for a while.
