Katsuhiro Otomo Many entry-level anime fans are familiar with Katsuhiro Otomo's visually astonishing 1988 film AKIRA, whose devotees include Kanye West. Less familiar, though no less captivating, is Otomo's epic, 2000+ page manga series AKIRA, on which the film was based: it's more effortful to consume, but it rewards the effort with a compelling, page-turning plot, plenty of action, a hint of political allegory, and better fleshed-out character development. Who knew that the boss of the Clown gang could have such a multifaceted personality?
