Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian born graphic novelist who was about ten years old during the 1979 revolution. Her (partial) autobiography Persepolis describes her experiences under increasing cultural restrictions in Iran, and lonely adolescent exile in European schools. She collaborated with french artist Vincent Paronnaud to create an animated feature film of Persepolis that was nominated for an Oscar (and lost to a nice but silly kids movie about rats or something). Her books are eloquent, heartbreaking, and hilarious. If you ever get the chance to go see her speak, at a book signing, or whatever, do it. --SP
