Stan Lee was one of the main people behind Marvel Comics' rise to success, both on the creative end, and the business end. If we leave it at that, this blurb will be much too short, so to be more specific, he had a hand in creating nearly every Marvel character you could name, helped everyone realize that the why of the hero was more important than his powers, and pioneered the idea of a "shared universe" in comics continuity.
