The Ten Geekiest Best Picture Nominees of All Time: #8 — E.T.
E.T. is considered by many critics to be the closest thing Steven Speilberg has made to an autobiography. Due to low expectations of the film’s success (it would pass Star Wars as history’s most financially sucessful film), the production had a couple of moments that people are probably still kicking themselves about. Columbia Pictures found the flim too sappy, and Speilberg wound up taking it to MCA to be filmed. The makers of M&Ms, as well, found E.T. himself so ugly that they passed up the use of their candy in the film, a place that Reese’s Pieces was glad to fill.
