10 Greatest Spheres, #6: A GLaDOS Personality Core

If you haven’t played Portal by now, but regularly use the internet, you probably already know about Portal. Due to memes like “the cake is a lie” and Jonathan Coulton’s, Still Alive, Portal kind of took over the internet for a while.

Aside from stellar gameplay, Portal is largely known for its antagonist, GlaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System), a bundle of personality spheres that combine to form one of the most memorable villains in gaming history. Through (what is widely regarded as) brilliant writing, GlaDOS antagonizes players over intercoms as they try to escape a testing facility, her personality spheres clashing with each other, essentially the cause for her truly creepy and deeply hilarious dialogue.

Though the game is light on exposition, it seems that GLaDOS’ experiments began when her Morality core malfunctioned, leaving her with only Curiosity, Intelligence, and Emotion Cores. The cake might be a lie, but a bundle of spheres being one the biggest phenomenons in gaming history stands as a testament to the sphere itself.
