Is this Quadrotor Light Show an Astonishing Artistic Feat or Grim Vision of the Future?

At this year’s Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase held at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, 16 quadrotor robots put on an unbelievable show. Using mirrors, LEDs, and some kind of sound manipulation system, the robots beeped and booped through a wigged out techno piece chillingly called “Meet Your Creator.” Art or ultimatum, you need to watch this. Video, after the break.

The show was put together by KMel Robotics along with Marshmallow Laser Feast. Though what technical wizardry went into the show isn’t completely clear, the creators do say that they used a Vicon tracking system, which allowed the robots to position themselves exactly. The result of all the jiggery pokery is pretty amazing.

This is an exciting field to be in, there’s all sorts of applications that are and will be possible, everything from escorting kids to/from school or playing by the pool in the backyard to collectively heavy lifting water to fires, and even personnel transportation.

Ah yes, I can see it now. Putting on my work shoes and standing out on my front porch with my arms outstretched at my sides. 8 quadrotor robots descend from the sky and latch onto my body. I’m lifted up and enjoy a nice refreshing breeze on my face as I’m flown to work. Wait, this isn’t the way to work..! Where are you taking me?! What’s going on?! Why are we heading towards the ocean front?!
