Sketchy Rent-to-Own Laptops Spied on Users, Took Photographs of Sexual Encounters

To preface the rest of this story, let’s just state once and for all that nearly all rent-to-own programs are sketchy, okay? There’s really nothing good about them, unless it’s the only option available. The Federal Trade Commission has only further reinforced this fact by revealing that several shady rent-to-own companies were spying on those using their laptops. They specifically installed spyware that could perform functions like taking pictures via the webcam and logging keystrokes.

Essentially, a number of rent-to-own stores were working in conjunction with a company called DesignerWare to track their laptop renters using a program called Detective Mode. The complaint claims that this software could use the webcam to photograph anything in range, take screenshots of whatever the laptop happened to be doing, and log what users typed. All this data would then get funneled back to DesignerWare, which would then hand it over to the stores with which it was working. So, yeah, quite a few privacy violations going on there.

Though the reprimand from the FTC effectively stops this kind of activity from continuing, they don’t have the authority to actually charge DesignerWare, or any company for that matter, with any kind of criminal activity; they only have civil authority. They couldn’t even fine the companies involved, according to Wired, because they can’t do so for the first violation.

The variety of information these stores were able to obtain ranged from private email correspondence to passwords, and even included sexual acts caught by the webcams, but the FTC is essentially powerless to do anything but stop it from continuing. That’s a comforting thought.

Why would you rent a laptop? If the needs do arise, close it when not in use. For God sake, these things has happened several times and people ought to be aware by now.

When are people gonna learn? After this debacle with Ravi/Rutgers, can’t yu tape or cover up the laptop when you aren’t using it? It is a loaned/rented laptop. Come on, friends. Use your noodle.

Yep, pretty damn despicable and shouldn’t be legal. Rent-to-own places, that is. Ha! Actually, they probably shouldn’t be, but installing spy software like this without users being properly notified should definitely not be legal. No more than gyms or suntanning establishments should be allowed to put hidden cameras in their locker rooms. And no, some fine print buried somewhere in a 10-page contract shouldn’t be adequate to get around such a privacy violation.

All this aside, doesn’t anyone else wonder why so many of the apps for smart phones these days have ever larger lists of permissions they demand to download/install the app? I’ve seen several which demand permissions for the app to access the camera or audio recording devices and this is even for apps that seemingly would never need to access a camera or audio recorder for the purpose of that particular app… A lot of smartphones now have cameras in the front and back of them. Technically speaking, there is an eye always watching.

I have avoided those apps that have raised my suspicions, whether from reputable companies or not because I have no idea what malicious apps might be able to piggy-back off of them and I don’t really see why any app needs so much permanent access to my phone. But it seems obvious that most folks don’t bother to notice any of this and those of us who do are often written off as conspiracy theory kooks.

I guess one can’t really blame these companies. They keep pushing this stuff farther and the public keeps happily tolerating it.

It’s easy for everyone who’s in a working job and can actually afford to buy a laptop outright, but when rent to own is the only option available, you take it. If this article could list the companies that would make this easier for everyone who’s at risk, because then we could actually run them out of business by refusing to buy from there.
Telling us to “tape over the camera” isn’t going to help when 1) you’re in a skype call, 2) you shouldn’t be leaving the laptop open when not in use anyway

    Soooooo… where are these pictures?
