Research Sheds Light on How Fins Became Limbs, One Step Closer to Creating Fish People

It is at this point fairly well uncontroversial to state that yes, man evolved from apes. What many don’t know, though, is that evolution goes much further further back, to when one fish-like common ancestor rebelled against the status quo, hauled itself up onto terra firma, and over the course of generations, grew limbs, consequences be damned. A study led by Dr. José Luis Gómez-Skarmeta and Dr. Fernando Casares of the CSIC-Universidad Pablo de Olavide-Junta de Andalucía in Seville, Spain, suggests that the administration of an extra copy of  the gene Hoxd13 in the fin of an embryonic zebrafish yielded the same sort of fin-to-limb development that would likely have seen during the evolution of ancient fish into land-based vertebrates.

When the Hoxd13 was introduced into the zebrafish embryo’s developing fin, researchers noted that production of cartilaginous tissue began to take place, while fin tissue in turn gradually diminished relative to the formation in the limb limbs. Going by these results, researchers pondered whether a Hoxd13 control element was responsible for increasing the production of the particular gene that incited this change in ambulatory fish. However, the modern aquatic descendents of these progenitors of nearly all land-based lifeforms are actually devoid of this element that controls Hoxd13 production.

Researchers borrowed the Hoxd13 control element from a mouse and placed it within the embryo of a zebrafish — the lab mouse of the sea. As per predictions, the control element activated the production of Hoxd13 within the fish, forming limb-like appendages instead of fins. Of this outcome, Dr. Casares said:

We found that in the zebrafish, the mouse Hoxd13 control element was capable of driving gene expression in the distal fin rudiment. This result indicates that molecular machinery capable of activating this control element was also present in the last common ancestor of finned and legged animals and is proven by its remnants in zebrafish.

Look, let’s not dance around the issue any longer, we’ve seen and read enough science fiction fare to know where experiments like these are going. Today it’s just small doses of Hoxd13. But down the line researchers are going to be incorporating human DNA along with this limb production, pushing us ever closer to the day we kneel before our zebrafish-men overlords. Though there are probably worse fates, we can’t think of any right off the tops of our heads.

It actually is pretty controversial to say that anything evolved from anything… Until it is proven, its speculation, and most real scientists will tell you that we can’t say anything for certain. Only laymen say for certain, yes, man evolved from apes.

That said, among the circles that steadfastly claim we have the bead on evolution, there is no question we didn’t evolve from fish. So no zebrafish-men… which is good, because I’m not really up for another civil rights movement

Thank you for taking the time to put my thoughts into words. That saved me some typing.

lol at enthusiast and jack bond, to state the notion that among scientist their is any, any at all, controversy over evolution is a lie and a delusion. Maybe in the “soft sciences” you can find some, but within the serious field like biology, physics, chemistry, it is rare to the point of being non-issue. I have a degree in genetics , and have studied /worked with many scientist, to them evolution is a well established fact. charles darwin theories have stood since 1859 i believe, if it has not been disproved yet , i seriously doubt it will ever it . it is a fact , you most likely have never examined the evidence and come to your conclusion based on the bible rather than evidence. # true story

Biology is a serious field? That’s funny.

Darwins theories have been proven wrong repeatedly. Only in the US and the UK is his word held as gospel. When you hold to a group of ideas even when they’ve been been proven wrong, you are no longer a scientist. The truth is that there’s no cohesive theory of evolution that can be supported with experiments in a controlled environment.

Darwin was wrong. Lamarck was wrong. There are small parts of both theories that have had enough vetting to be accepted widely, but we don’t have a grip on it. To state otherwise is ignorant and arrogant.

  • reallydude?

yes biology is a serious field. you know that little thing we call medicine , is a branch of biology. i guess living twice as long as your ancestors mean nothing to you. Our understanding of evolution is key in creating new vaccines/medicine for the new strains that pop up every year. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, please i would like to know what evidence exactly made you believe evolution did not happen, maybe i could clear up your misconceptions.

  • reallydude?

furthermore , the whole world is feed , using principle based on the work of Mendel and Darwin. If we did not use such techniques millions of people will die of starvation . So is biology a serious field? in your , silliness you say no. Every scientist would love to disprove the work of Darwin , they would become world famous. why don’t they? they can’t and never will.

I’ve seen these guys around a lot, so let me just give you this piece of advice; Don’t get into a evolution, global warming, or any other defense of commonly accepted science based argument with them.

Why? First take a look into Jack’s comment history, observe the short and long term success of those who argued and refuted him before you, now ask yourself if this argument’s outcome has any reason to be any different.

Second consider that you are attempting to use logic to best a man who just casually dismissed an entire major field of very well supported science.

Lastly look at the location of your quarrel, you are both on the internet, the single largest collection of data in human history, and probably both have a built in search bar on each of your browsers. In spite of this they are still using long refuted arguments which could be addressed and dismissed by a single web-search and a few minutes of their own time.

Those two our quite comfortable in their self imposed ignorance and it will take a higher power than you or I to wrench them out of it. For the time being I suggest save any further breath on this matter, your point has been made, nothing more can be done.
