Rogue Elephant Ate Human Flesh Out of Revenge

After a rogue elephant killed seventeen people in India, it had to be put down. Afterward, DNA tests on its stomach’s contents showed the elephant ate human flesh, which is pretty odd, considering elephants are herbivores. In the story on Dave Salmoni’s new show on Animal Planet, he claims the elephant went rogue and ate people in an act of revenge after its calf was killed. Futurama made the joke a long time ago, so luckily, no one has to–in bad taste–this time around.

Unfortunately, this occurrence isn’t very unique, as it happens in parts of Africa a lot, especially during the period of elephant population control – i.e. culling.

There is a record of one elephant that attacked a village and turned out to have been part of a group that was hunted down many years before when it was a child. The elephant had the memory of humans murdering its parents, and now acted in anger when it encountered a settlement of them.

The sad part here, in my opinion, isn’t that humans were harmed, but that elephants were. Elephants aren’t openly violent creatures, but reactionary. Their excellent memory only compounds this. They’re forced to remember their ordeal, but where our self-consciousness enables us to think about our situation and react appropriately, to them, we all look the same, and we all look like the person that killed their family. (There is something to be said about the fact that many humans will also react violently when encountering the killer of their family, however, so elephant attacks aren’t necessarily difficult to understand or other-worldly.)

The solution here isn’t to kill more elephants out of fear of attack, but prevent their murder in the first place. If they have no reason to attack, they will not attack. As it stands, elephants have a very rational reason for being angry with humans.
